Tourism: UNWTO Expresses Great Concern over the Change of Status of the Spanish Tourism Secretariat
While the decision of the Spanish Government to implement a series of austerity measures to address the public deficit is fully understandable, UNWTO expressed great concern that such measures have translated into the end of a separate Secretariat for Tourism. This decision sends out the wrong message to the market and comes at a critical moment, at the beginning of the tourism high season and as the sector still struggles to recover from the loses of 2009.

UNWTO has been working
to raise awareness on climate change issues in the tourism sector for many
years and much has been achieved. The time is right for all those involved
to forge ahead. Any further delay in action will result in consequences for
the tourism industry and the people who depend upon the sector.

Travel &
Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world providing a strong
impetus to global economic development. In 2009, the Travel & Tourism
Economy is expected to account for 9.3% of global GDP and to generate over
210 million jobs, or 7.4% of global employment. In 2008, 922 million
international tourist arrivals were recorded, contributing US$944 billion in
international tourism receipts. The industry has often acted ahead of
regulation to adopt and disseminate standards and best practices on
greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation and adaptation.

Tourism: Miami Beach and U.S. Department of the Interior Salute Art Deco District's 30th Anniversary of Designation on National Register of Historic Places
Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) activists fought against all odds 30 years ago to save Miami Beach's Art Deco architecture from bulldozers and demolition, and few could have imagined the impact their efforts would have on the city's future. Led by founder Barbara Baer Capitman, the League won its landmark battle on May 14, 1979, when the Art Deco District was named to the National Register of Historic Places - the first time a 20th century district was recognized as "Historic" by the U.S. government. Since then, every element of South Beach's renaissance may be traced back to this defining moment.
