UNWTO and the Town Council of Palma signed today an agreement establishing Palma as the first pilot costal destination to join the Hotel Energy Solutions (HES) project. Over the coming months, the twenty five participating hotels in Palma de Majorca will test the beta version of the HES e-toolkit, a specialized online tool enabling them to assess their current energy needs and prioritize investment in energy.

Travel: International Tourist Arrivals up 7% in the First Half of 2010: Asia Leads Growt

The first six months of 2010 saw international tourist arrivals grow by 7% according to the August Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This result confirms the recovery trend beginning in the last quarter of 2009 and is expected to continue in the second half of the year at a somewhat more moderate rate. The Interim Update was officially presented at the 4th UNWTO/PATA Forum on Tourism Trends and Outlook (2-4 September, Guilin, China) to tourism stakeholders from the public and private sector, as well as academia.

To mark the beginning of a new phase in its Silk Road Programme, UNWTO, in collaboration with the Government of Uzbekistan, will hold the 5th International Meeting on the Silk Road on 8-9 October 2010 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The Meeting will introduce new concepts for Silk Road branding and marketing, destination management and travel facilitation and will set out key strategies for the UNWTO’s ‘Silk Road Action Plan 2010-2011’.

International tourist arrivals grew by 7% in the first four months of 2010 according to the latest issue of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This growth confirms the recovery trend beginning in the last quarter of 2009 and comes despite the challenging conditions of recent months. While April’s results were affected by the week-long closure of European airspace, globally the pace of recovery is faster than initially expected, driven largely by emerging markets. For the full year 2010, UNWTO forecasts international tourist arrivals to grow by 3% to 4%.
